Best Orientation for a House in Spain

South orientation: It is the best orientation especially for cold climates and with long winters since it receives solar radiation all year round. In temperate or even warm climates it is also a good orientation, it will allow us to make the most of the light and solar radiation, although, in warm climates, horizontal awnings or eaves will be convenient to avoid excess radiation in summer. It is a good option for large rooms, such as living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, since the heat captured during the day will be released at night.

Southeast orientation: This is another of the best possible orientations. In very hot areas it can be more advisable than the south orientation. In winter, we will receive radiation all day long, especially in the morning. In summer, from midday onwards, the level of radiation received is lower.

East orientation: In this orientation we will have light and solar radiation in the mornings that will be released later in the afternoon. It is an alternative to the south orientation in very hot areas. In areas with cold winters, the house will be warmer in the mornings but we will spend colder nights. If we were annoying the Sun at this time of day (still very inclined, especially in winter), we can resort to the placement of vertical awnings.

Northeast orientation: In winter we will not receive direct solar radiation throughout the day, in summer only in the morning. It is an orientation that we can take advantage of for garages, storage rooms or other areas of the house with less importance and use.

North orientation: This is a good option for offices and offices because, although it only receives direct radiation in the mornings and afternoons in summer (in winter it does not receive radiation), it is the only orientation with a uniform and homogeneous amount of light throughout the day. It is also a good choice for garages, pantries and utility rooms.

Northwest orientation: As in the northeast orientation, in winter we will not receive solar radiation all day long. In summer we will catch the sun's rays in the late afternoon.

West orientation: Depending on the climatology of the place where we live and our routine, it can be a good alternative orientation to the south or east. We will receive direct light and radiation from noon to dusk, which will serve to heat the house before nightfall. However, if we live in areas with very hot summers, we will suffer excessive overheating of the rooms with this orientation late in the day. In these situations of hot climates, it is advisable to use vertical awnings, especially in summer.

Southwest orientation: We will receive direct radiation in the afternoons of the winter months, from noon to night. In summer we will also receive direct sunlight from noon onwards, when the sun is still very vertical. It is another alternative to south orientation although, in hot climates, we can suffer an excessive heating of the house after midday.
